The Melbourne Cup, is run over 3200 metres every November, and is the highlight of the Australian racing calendar. It attracts by far the biggest number of Flemington bets. Over time, good value has been by those backing the winner in the Melbourne Cup - since the great Phar Lap won in 1930 at $1.72, no horse has won at shorter Flemington odds.

Flemington Betting Tips

For punters that study the previous results for their Flemington betting, it is worth noting that the most common number of favourites to win per day is two, 2.5 wins from favourites at the track being the average.

Flemington betting proved a rewarding experience for backers of Makybe Diva. The winner of three straight Melbourne Cups between 2003 and 2005, Makybe Diva won seven times in total at Flemington and earned his connections almost $10 million in stakes.

Besides winning three Melbourne Cups, Makybe Diva also entered the winners' circle at Flemington after the Australian Cup G1 in March 2005 and the Turnbull Stakes G2 seven months later.

Greg Childs is the leading jockey at the course since 2002, with 69 wins at a strike rate of 13 per cent, and a healthy profit of $777 to a $10 stake during that period.

Childs' 527 rides at Flemington have returned more than $6.6 million in stakes, but that leaves him lagging behind Damien Oliver whose popularity in Flemington betting is reflected in his winnings of $12.4 million there since 2002. Jamie Mott may be a relatively infrequent visitor to the track, but his impressive strike record of 21 per cent - more than four per cent better than his nearest rival since 2002 - ensures he attracts more than his share of Flemington bets. Other jockeys to consider in Flemington betting are Luke Nolen and Dwayne Dunn. Since 2002, they are the only two jockeys whose profit to a $10 stake are over $900, with Nolen just ahead on the strength of his 26 wins - double Dunn's tally.

Punters weighing up the Flemington odds would do well to look into trainer Lee Freedman's record on the course. Freedman's 89 wins since 2002 put him 30 clear of his nearest challenger Danny O'Brien, and he is approaching $20 million in stakes. But Freedman would not be an automatic choice to follow consistently - those backing all his horses since 2002 with a $10 stake would have come out more than $800 dollars in the red.

O'Brien and David Hall have the best strike record at Flemington in recent times, with 17 per cent of their runners landing winning Flemington odds. O'Brien has been the more profitable, returning a $540 profit on his runners since 2002.
